NEW DELHI, JUL 14 - Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala has held a meeting with Chairperson of United Progressive Alliance Chairman Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Thursday.

In the meeting, Gandhi inquired about the progress in Nepal’s peace process and statute drafting.

“India wants to see peace, prosperity, stability and establishment of democracy in Nepal,” Koirala told eKantipur, quoting Gandhi as saying in the meeting.

In response, the NC president said his party has been striving to take the peace and statute drafting to a logical end.  He reportedly underscored the need for consensus among the big parties to conclude these tasks.

“The problem surfaced due to the Maoists’ failure to comply with the past agreements. However, there is no alternative to unity among the parties,” he said. Koirala termed the meeting as “fruitful and productive”.  Congress-I Foreign Department Chief Karan was also present at the meeting.

The leaders also discussed the bilateral ties between the two countries. “I told Sonia ji that the relations between the two parties should be further strengthened,” Koirala said.

Koirala, who had arrived here in New Delhi four days ago after completing his US trip, held consultations with various Indian leaders.

Besides Gandhi, Koirala met with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Sing, Finance Minister and External Affairs Minister, among other leaders.

The NC president is scheduled to arrive home on Friday.
