5 police among 7 injured in police firing
CHITWAN, JUL 13 -
Five police personnel and two locals were injured on Wednesday as police fired shots to resume the highway that was obstructed by the locals at Khairahani section of the East-West highway.
Locals Binod Chaudhary and Sunil Pun have been taken to Chitwan Medical College for treatment. Eyewitnesses said that Chaudhary was shot on his leg, but is said to be out of danger now.
The locals obstructed the highway protesting the dealy in providing compensaiton to the families of those killed in road accident on June at Khareni. Following the accident, an agreement was reached earlier to provide rupees five hundred thousand to each of the families. However, families have received only Rs. 25,000 for performing the death rituals of the deceased.
Police said that they were compelled to "fire into the air" as the locals were about to cut off one of the buisiest highways.
The situation calmed down following a talks between the locals and authorities at the District Police Office.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Ravindra Prasad Sharma said that both the parties (locals and police) involved in the clash have admitted their mistakes at the meeting.
“Both the parties agreed to rectify their mistakes and to persuade the authorities to provide the compensation as soon as possible,” Sharma said.
