SARLAHI, JUL 13 - An armed gang on Tuesday night looted passengers on a Pokhara-bound bus on the Sarlahi stretch of the east-west highway.

Four pistol-wielding youths had controlled the driver and taken the vehicle into the Banke forest in Sarlahi district at around 10:30 pm before looting cash and valuables worth about Rs 150,000, police said.

The looters had got on the bus from Itahari, Sunsari, in the guise of passengers. Two passengers sustained minor injuries while trying to retaliate against the armed looters. There were 15 passengers on board when the incident took place.

The looters took the passenger bus about one-and-a-half kilometres into the forest where six other looters were waiting. They beat up the passengers while taking away their cash and valuables.

Police reached the site immediately after being informed of the incident and sent the vehicle to its destination. The victims suspected the looters to be local goons, police said.

Incidents of passenger vehicles being looted on highways were unheard of for quite some time, owing to security presence at risky places.

According to the District Police Office, highway patrolling had decreased significantly in the area following the transfer of a superintendent of police. "Security personnel are reluctant to patrol the highway after the new SP's warning to take action against anyone caught receiving money unlawfully. Cops used to patrol highways also expecting money from vehicle operators," a source claimed.
