Nepali bludgeoned to death in UK
LONDON, JUL 08 - A Nepali man was killed in a brutal attack by an unidentified assailant at West Croydon in the UK on Thursday morning. The victim has been identified as Umesh Chaudhary, 42, of Rajbiraj in Nepal, and was attacked by the assailant with a brick. The attack took place shortly after Chaudhary left his residence for work at a department store at around 7 am.
Suraj Bhandari, who witnessed the gory incident, described how the assailant repeatedly hit Chaudhary on the head with a brick without any apparent argument. "The unidentified man kept hitting Chaudhary on the head with the brick even as I looked through the window after hearing unusual sounds outside," said Bandari. "When I reached the incident site, Chaudhary was already lying in a pool of blood." For the last seven months, Bhandari has been living in the same house as has been Chaudhary's family.
It took the local police nearly 15 minutes to reach the crime scene while Bhandari and others managed to take control of the assailant. Chaudhary, who received horrendous head injuries in the attack, was rushed to St. George Hospital where doctors declared him dead in the afternoon.
The motive behind the gruesome attack is not immediately known. Police said they are trying to determine the cause that led the assailant to commit the heinous crime. Chaudhary's wallet and mobile set were found scattered on the crime scene.
Bhandari said he was not aware of Chaudhary's rancour with anyone. Appealing to witnesses to extend cooperation to resolve the case, police have taken the 18-year-old assailant of Afghan ethnicity into custody and begun investigation into his mental health.
Chaudhary, who is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter, had been living in the UK for the last one decade and working in the store since 2002, according to family sources. Since last Dashain festival, his wife had come to the UK to stay with him.
