MoFA decision to distribue MRP sparks protests
KATHMANDU, JUL 08 - The Minister of Foreign Affairs (MoFA)’s decision to start collection and distribution of Machine Readable Passports (MRPs) in 38 districts has sparked protests.
People have been protesting against the ministry’s decision to choose the districts without taking into account the number of passport seekers.
The protesters have complained that districts like Jhapa, Dhanusha and Mahottari, where arguably have the highest number of people seeking passports, were not selected for passport distribution.
The contact forums of these districts have handed over memoranda against what they said the “unequal decentralization” by the MoFA and Home Ministry.
The normal passports–that can be obtained in a month and cost Rs 5,000–would be distributed from the new outlets starting from July 17. But the emergency passport – that can be obtained within a week by paying Rs 10,000 – would be distributed by the Foreign Ministry office in the Capital only.
“The collection and distribution of the passports in 38 districts is initiated by the Foreign Ministry in association of the Home ministry. The outlets have been selected on the basis of geography rather than on the basis of the number of the seekers,” said Rudra Nepal, the Foreign Joint-Secretary.
