KATHMANDU, JUL 05 -

With World Bank (WB) funding to the government-run Avian Influenza Control Project (AICP) drawing to a close this month, the WB, as a part of its closure programme, has started building isolation wards in four hospitals of the country and a biosafety level-2 laboratory at the National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL).

The isolation wards being built in the Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital (STIDH) in Teku; the Nepalgunj Medical College;  BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) in Dharan and Bharatpur District Hospital in Chitwan since March is expected to be complete by the end of July. The STIDH will have an eight-bed isolation ward, while others will have only six beds in them.

The wards will cost around Rs 80 million, while technical assistance is being provided by World Health Organisation (WHO). With the completion of the buildings, the WB will also fund an additional Rs 15 million for the installment of equipment in the wards.

"With the completion of the isolation wards, the capacity of the referral hospitals will be strengthened and they can handle critical cases of influenza and other respiratory diseases smoothly," Dr Jitendra Man Shrestha, deputy coordinator of AICP, said. Shrestha added that cases of death due to respiratory diseases will drastically come down in the country once the wards are in place.

STIDH Director Dr Mithila Sharma said it will be easy for the hospital to handle critical cases that require patients to be isolated. "So far we have been referring such cases to other hospitals," Sharma said.

Sharma added that the biosafety level-2 lab is being built for the first time in the country.
