Morcha submits 15-point memorandum to PM
KATHMANDU, JUL 02 - The Samuykta Loktantrik Madhdesi Morcha on Saturday handed over a 15-point memorandum to Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal expressing concern over the functioning of the government.
The memorandum is also said to have contained concern of the Morcha on the upcoming budget.
The Morcha is said to have asked the PM to address the concerns raised by the alliance in the upcoming budget. The issues raised by Morcha in its 15-point demands pertaining to programme and policies of the government include building a school in the native place of the martyrs of the Madhes uprising. Also, the Morcha has asked for the establishment of a national academy to study various aspects of the Madhes uprising. Further the alliance has sought special plan to preserve the Chure region. On the issue of agriculture, the alliance seeks for irrigation facilities in the region along with subsidies in the seeds. Similarly, the Morcha has asked the government to prioritise the postal road along with East-West railway. Likewise, the alliance has also called for expediting the process of building international airport in Nijgad along with building international regional airports at Bhairawa and Janakpur, which would help promote tourism in the area.
According to Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party-Nepal Chairman Mahendra Yadav, the PM has sounded positive on the demands of the Morcha. However, he added, it is yet to be seen whether the assurances will translate into reality. Yadav warned that if the demands are not met then the Morcha will be compelled to take action. But, when asked about the nature of the action, he said that the alliance is yet to decide on it and that will be done after seeing the policy, programmes and budget of the government.
Meanwhile, other demands in the memorandum include making inclusive the transfers of the bureaucrats and police officers in the Madhes. Yadav said that the Morcha has asked the government to send officers of Madhesi origin to the region. Similarly, the alliance has also called for inclusiveness in the judiciary. The Morcha, according to Yadav, also called on the government to withdraw cases of the Madhes uprising along with providing amnesty to those armed outfits that agree to talks. Likewise, the Morcha is said to have asked the government to upheld past commitments made with the alliance. The Morcha also brought to government notice the fact that some malpractices in census taking in Madhes. According to Yadav, Morcha apprised the PM of the fact that enumerators are not mentioning the second language of the respondents in Madhes. And in some cases they have mentioned it as Nepali without asking the respondent.
