Five missing in Trishuli River

Five people went missing when an aerial tram plunged into the Trishuli river at Ghyalchowk VDC-9 in Gorkha district on Monday.

Police said Ranjeet Gaire, Mishra Shreshta, Ram Kumar Shrestha, Amritlal Shreshta and Riju Silwal were swept away by Trishuli in the accident. Five others survived the incident. Search operation for the missing was underway until late evening.

Suraj Khadka, one of the survivors, said the accident happened when one of the support pillars holding the cable split in the middle of the haul, causing the cable to sag and dunking the tram in the river numerous times.

“When the tram emerged out of the water after the first drop and plunged again, five of the passengers fell off. Soon they were swept awayby the current,” said Khadka.

The aerial tramway was built more than 40 years ago by the Chinese government, originally to ferry construction materials for Prithvi Highway. Later, the tram was used to carry passengers to make the crossing. Depsite the risks entailed as many as 14 people used to make the crossing through the tram at a time.  The tramway has not undergone any repair works in the last 18 years.

Local people said that they had requested the concerned authorities to repair the tramway and build a bridge over Trishuli many a times in the past, but of no avail. After the Monday’s accident, the local people obstructed the Prithvi Highway for three hours in protest. The protest was withdrawn after the Chief District Officer Mohan Prasad Wagle assured the locals to begin construction of a bridge over the river this year.
