KATHMANDU, JUN 25 -

Agitating petroleum transport operators on Friday withdrew their strike after they struck an agreement with Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) against relocating 60 petroleum tankers on the Kathmandu-Raxaul route from Barauni-Amelkhgunj. “We have decided to withdraw the strike after the NOC rolled back its earlier decision,” said Utsav Itani, the coordinator of the ad-hoc committee formed to pressurise the NOC. The Friday meeting also decided to relocate tankers in a “scientific manner” in the future.

As per a report of the High-level Petroleum Sector Reform Committee, the NOC on Tuesday decided to relocate 60 additional tankers in the Kathmandu-Raxaul route that were hired for transporting fuel in the Barauni-Amelkhgunj route.

The committee had recommended that import from Barauni was imposing an additional transportation cost and that fuel shrinkages were high due to high temperature.

Currently, there are 300 tankers plying the Kathmandu-Raxaul route, while about 138 are hired for transporting fuel from Barauni.

The Central-Region Tanker Operators’ Association (CRTOA) had announced the strike against the NOC decision.

It feared that relocating 60 additional tankers in their route would affect their business. Following the strike, fuel deliveries in all private pumps in the capital were affected on Thursday and Friday.

With fuel supplies halted for two consecutive days from the Thankot depot to private pumps, the Capital saw long queues of motorists in front of state-owned petrol pumps. “On Friday, the Thankot depot supplied fuel to state-owned pumps only,” said NOC’s Thankot depot chief Bhuwaneshwar Rajbhandari.
