FNCCI concerned over Surya Nepal garment closure
KATHMANDU, JUN 21 -
The Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) has expressed serious concern over the closure of Surya Nepal’s garmet unit in Biratnagar, Morang. The apex private sector body has urged the management and agitating workers to resolve the dispute on workers’ salary through dialogue.
Incidents such as manhandling, locking of officials inside the factory, gherao, and threats to factory officials had taken place at the factory following the management’s decision to implement ‘no work no pay’ provision. “The unlawful activities of workers have created havoc in the industrial sector,” read an FNCCI press release issued on Monday.
Surya Nepal’s garment factory has been closed for an indefinite period after the tussle between the management and workers. The tussle surfaced after the management refused to pay workers for six days of strike that was enforced in mid-April under the ‘no work no pay’ provision.
FNCCI in the release said it is firm on its stance that salaries will not be provided to workers for strike days. “We have already signed an agreement with trade unions that salaries will not be paid to workers for the days of illegal strike,” added the release.
