Schools shut in Biratnagar over student attack
BIRATNAGAR, JUN 17 -
Private schools across the town of Biratnagar in Morang district remained closed on Friday demanding security of the students. However, government schools were partly opened.
The schools were shut demanding security after a student was injured when the agitating UML-aligned Youth Association Nepal (YAN) cadres pelted stones at the bus carrying school students. The YAN cadres were protesting the arrest of YAN Central Chairman Mahesh Basnet.
A fifth grader at Sagarmatha Boarding School, Arpan Pokhrel, sustained serious head injury when the stone hurled by YAN cadres landed on his head. He underwent a surgery at local Neuro Hospital last night. He is said to be out of danger.
The school board director and PABSON central member, Basu Neupane condemned the incident and demanded action against the attackers, treatment of the injured and compensation.
Neupane said the situation had become so bad that there was no certainty whether the students would return home safe after school.
Mother of the victim child fell unconscious upon seeing her child, who had gone to school, at the hospital bed.
The incident has drawn condemnation from several quarters.
