Historical area in utter neglect
KATHMANDU, JUN 17 -
The historical place that bears witness to the origination of Ghode Jatra is on the verge of losing its identity, as the stakeholders responsible for its conservation are not giving a fig.
Ghode Jatra has been celebrated since the Lichhavi period. Every year in April, the Nepal Army celebrates it with a great gusto in the presence of the president, the prime minister, ministers, top government officials and international diplomats.
The festival is organised on the same day when Tudi or Gurumapa, believed to be a demon who created havoc among the people and misbehaved with children eons ago, was buried under a Khari tree in Tudikhel. Though the ancient tree was cut down years ago, another tree was planted in the same place. The area in and around the tree’s trunk has been converted into an open toilet by people passing through Tudhikhel.
“It is unfortunate to see the place, which is the root cause of celebrating Ghode Jatra and the place where demon is still believed to be buried, being ignored,” said archeologist Prajwal Hada, who is doing a research on the origination of Gurumapa. Similarly, it is believed that if horses don’t hoof in Tudhikhel during Ghode Jatra, Gurumapa will regain his power again and create terror in Kathmandu.
