KATHMANDU, JUN 16 -

The Home Ministry on Thursday evening reached an agreement with the CPN-UML-aligned Youth Association (YA) to release YA Central Chairman Mahesh Basnet.

The YA withdrew its general strike call for Friday following the dialogue with the Home Ministry in Singha Durbar, in the presence of Home Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara.

Earlier in the day, police had detained Basnet from Riverside Resort in Itahari, while he was organsing a press conference, and brought him to Biratnagar, thereby triggering widespread protests across the nation including the capital.

The meeting reached the agreement to free Basnet, along with the other youth leaders of YA, and form a probe panel to look into the excessive use of force by the police and provide compensation to victims of the clashes, said CPN-UML Youth Incharge and Central Committee member Yogesh Bhattarai after the meeting.

Mahara had called for a talk with the YA but the cadres declined it. The meeting had started only after UML Chairman and Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal directed Bhattarai to calm down the situation through talks.
