Three ‘leopard smugglers’ arrested
KANCHANPUR, JUN 14 -
A joint team of the District Forest Office and the Shukla Phanta Wildlife Reserve (SPWR) arrested three persons with two sets of leopard hides from Krishnapur VDC in Kanchanpur district on Monday.
According to the SPWR administration, the team approached Dal Bahadur Gharti and Bam Bahadur Malla of Kailali and Janak Raj Giri of Kanchanpur in the guise of clients and arrested them.
A source at the SPWR said Giri is the assistant platoon
commander of the People’s Liberation Army of the
UCPN (Maoist) at the Sahajpur Satellite Camp.
District Forest Officer Ramesh Chand said the arrestees have been involved in smuggling the hides and bones of various wild animals in the area since long.
“We were able to arrest them after a month-long effort,” he said, adding that there is an international racket of smugglers in Kanchanpur, Kailali and the bordering Indian state involved in smuggling tiger skin and rhino horns.
