‘UML won’t provide amnesty to journo assaulters’
KATHMANDU, JUN 12 - CPN-UML General Secretary Ishwor Pokharel has said on Monday that his party would not provide amnesty to the attackers of Biratnagar-based journalist Khilnath Dhakal.
“They [the attackers] won’t be pardoned even if they are the cadres of the UML,” said the UML leader, at the party headquarters in Balkhu, Kathmandu, while receiving a memorandum from the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) regarding the attack. “Such persons should be brought to justice and the state must take action against them.”
Reiterating his party’s stand in support of press freedom, the UML leader opined that action should be taken against the guilty regardless of their affiliation to any party.
“Party Chairman [Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal] has already said that the guilty will be booked,” added Pokharel, hinting at the FNJ’s accusation that the party has remained silent on the issue. “The party will not give patronage to the criminals.”
The FNJ team led by Vice Chairperson Yashoda Timsina has urged the UML to immediately publicise its view regarding the attack. The delegation handed over a preliminary report prepared by the FNJ mission under the leadership of FNJ General Secretary Om Sharma.
At the programme, Chairman of UML-aligned Youth Force, Mahesh Basnet vehemently denied the involvement of Morang Youth Force Chairman Parshuram Basnet in the attack on journalist Khilnath Dhakal.
Morang district correspondent of Nagarik daily, Dhakal was beaten black and blue by the alleged cadres of CPN-UML aligned Youth Force for publishing news.
