Impunity a major menace: Pradhan
KATHMANDU, JUN 09 -
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Spokesman Gauri Pradhan has told the Human Rights Council (HRC) that the state of impunity has emerged as a major problem for the society in Nepal.
Presenting NHRC’s response to the UPR Final Report submitted by the government in HRC, Geneva on Tuesday, Pradhan said, “The state of impunity has emerged as a menace for the society. Despite commitments expressed by major political parties years ago, formation of Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Disappearance Commission, for which NHRC has already recommended, are unacceptably delayed.” This situation, he said, creates space for re-victimisation and widespread increase in the culture of impunity as there is fear of losing, damaging or destroying evidence. Expressing concern over delay in the endorsement of draft bill on NHRC, he said the commission and other rights defenders have been working to ensure that the bill complies with the Paris Principles.
