KATHMANDU, JUN 08 - Democracy in peril: Koirala

KATHMANDU

EKANTIPUR REPORT

Nepali Congress (NC) President Sushil Koirala on Wednesday urged the media persons to remain alert, citing that the democracy was in peril.

“The nation is in crisis and the democracy is in peril,” said the NC president, speaking at a programme organised at the party headquarters in Sanepa to honour the newly elected office bearers of Federation of Nepali Journalists. “We could be stripped of democracy, if we do not become alert.”

Noting that the media played vital role in the changes that have taken places in Nepal so far, Koirala said that his party would not accept the activities against press. He made it clear that his party has not taken the attack on press lightly.

“The NC will stand with the journalists to protest against the attack on the press,” said NC. “We can’t tolerate it [attack on press] and won’t take it lightly.”

At the function, FJN President Shiva Gaule voiced worry saying that the press had come under series of attack in recent times. He appealed to the political parties and civil society to express solidarity against the attacks.

“Once again, we are facing the situation where we have to cry out, just like the days before the people’s movement-II, for allowing us to live and write,” said Gaule.

“Only our [journalists] voice is not enough, so the political parties and civil society should lend support.”

Likewise, Nepal Press Union Chairman Kiran Pokhrel said the situation of journalists have not improved despite the rising investment in the media.
