KATHMANDU, JUN 07 - UCPN (Maoist) Spokesperson Dina Nath Sharma remarked on Tuesday the peace process has gained substantial momentum 10 days after the extension of Constituent Assembly (CA)’s term. But the constitution-drafting process has not gained any pace whatsoever, he added.

In a meeting of the Legislature-Parliament today, the Maoist spokesperson said that ending the dual security system of his party leaders and preparation of time-bound modality for the integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist People’s Liberation Army were notable steps that Maoists have taken.

Alleging that the Nepali Congress (NC) and the CPN-UML have not shown much interest in the statue drafting process, he added that the Maoists have become responsible on its part in the peace process.

The Maoist leader urged the NC and UML to become more serious in the statute-drafting process and give a notable momentum on the same.

Sharma went on to say that the peace, statute and power-sharing issues were interconnected and that all should be guided simultaneously.

Claiming the prime minister will resign from the post as soon as the basis for national consensus government is formed, Sharma urged all the sides to have faith on PM Jhala Nath Khanal and endeavour for consensus.

Sharma also took exception to the assault on journalist Khilnath Dhakal by activists of UML-affiliated Youth Force and Democratic Youth Association on Sunday night in Morang district. He said that the activists of the PM’s party should not engage themselves on such condemnable activities.

‘Progress in peace vital for consensus’

NC General Secretary Prakash Man Singh opined that the remaining fundamental issues on the statue drafting process such as state restructuring and forms of government would be automatically resolved once the peace process is logically concluded.

Lauding the recent progress in the peace process such as ending the dual security system of the Maoist leaders, Singh added that the statute can be drafted only after the completion of the peace process.

The NC leaders proposed to form a monitoring team from within the Legislature-Parliament for the implementation of the five-point pact.

In another context, Singh expressed reservations over the government’s moves on budget head transfers and appointments at the top educational institutions of the government.

‘Consensus before PM’s resignation’

UML lawmaker and State Affairs Committee Chairman Ram Nath Dhakal said that PM Khanal would resign from his post only after the formation of a basis for national consensus government. He added that the Constitutional Committee has already summoned two meetings after the term of the CA was extended, but the Dispute Resolution Committee has had none.

Dhakal opined that the government should be able to appoint officials as there were many vacant posts at various government bodies.

Meanwhile, Dhakal criticised the editorial published in the Gorkhapatra Daily on Tuesday, saying that the contents in the editorial were not appropriate to be published in state media.

He added that CA Chairman Subash Chandra Nembang should prepare an agenda to get his lawmakers engaged in the process of statute drafting.
