Conflict experience still haunts children
NEPALGUNJ, JUN 02 -
Nine-year-old Kamal Mahatara was injured when an improvised explosive device went off at Sarkideu in Humla district last week. The third grader is being treated in Nepalgunj.
Dipak Chaudhary of Banke lost his left eye in an explosion on Feb 26, 2008. The incident occurred while he was returning from school. “I still fear going to school thinking another bomb may go off on the way,” he said.
These two are just cases in point. Many children in mid-western districts are living in a constant fear of this kind. Eight students were hurt when stray bombs exploded at different places of Banke, Bardiya, Dolpa, Dailekh, Surkhet, Kalikot and Humla districts in the last five years. Most of the injured have lost their eyes and hands while some of them are living with mental and physical traumas and some with bullets in their bodies.
Sixteen people died in the region in such explosions after the Comprehensive Peace Accord. Both state security forces and Maoist rebels planted bombs during the decade-long insurgency. Seven of the deceased are children while the number of children hurt during the insurgency is 61 in the region. Most injured children are deprived of education.
