Clamour to upgrade climate change centre
KATHMANDU, MAY 31 -
There is a need to develop the Nepal Climate Change Knowledge Management Centre (NCCKMC) as a national-level scientific institution that will work in authenticating data and sharing science-based information on climate change in the country, experts said on Monday.
In a meeting with climate change practitioners organised by the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), Adarsha Pokhrel, former director general of Department of Hydrology and Meteorology and a climate change expert, said the centre can be capacitated and enhanced as a national-level knowledge management centre to generate scientific data on climate change.
The NCCKMC was established at the NAST in November 2010 and aims to carry out advanced climate studies and
provide climate change knowledge management and learning support to policymakers, researchers, students and the general public.
Assistant country director of UN’s Development Programme Vijay Singh said climate change and its impact is the most important issue for the country and it needs scientific data and findings to communicate this issue more strongly at the national and global level.
“We lack in providing science-based information and findings on climate change that is a must in global negotiations and put our issue strongly and effectively. The centre should be used as a authenticating body to deal with climate change and bridge the gap of scientific uncertainties in the country,” Singh said.
According to Dinesh Raj Bhuju, chief of the science faculty at NAST, the centre aims to strengthen collaborative and inter-disciplinary climate change research in the country. In the meantime, it will also help facilitate interface between scientific research, policymaking and decision making process and development planning.
“We aim to serve as a dedicated institution for managing climate change knowledge in Nepal in the long run,” he added.
