KATHMANDU, MAY 26 -

A day after the government declared educational institutes as peace zone, the community schools across the Valley remained closed on Thursday owing to the shutdown called by the central level Temporary Teachers Struggle Committee (TTSC).

The shutdown came as a big blow to the government’s bid to keep the educational institutions away from politics, strikes and other possible obstructions. The shutdown deprived thousands of students from pre-primary to higher secondary schools of studies.

TTSU, the umbrella body of temporary teachers who have been agitating since Jan. 23 demanding for their permanent status through internal competition, called for the shutdown accusing the government of disregarding their modest protest. “During our protest for the last four months, the government never invited us for talks that compelled us to take the sterner path,” said TTSC President Nirendra Kunwar. He also warned of enforcing indefinite shutdown across the country if their demands are not addressed.

Though the Ministry of Education (MoE) on May 13 had proposed the Cabinet for the eighth amendment to the Education Act-1971 to pave the way for the internal competition for permanent posting, TTSC has not given up its protest, saying that the proposal came without their consensus.

Meanwhile, UCPN (Maoist) aligned Nepal Educational Republic Forum (NERF) had warned of shutting down all private and government schools across the country for three days starting June 1.
