SC Secretariat asks security bodies, PLA to name reps
KATHMANDU, MAY 25 -
The Special Committee Secretariat on Wednesday asked all three security agencies—Nepal Army, Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force (APF)—and the People's Liberation Army (PLA) to name their representatives for the monitoring of 21 satellite cantonment sites.
The cross-party body of the Special Committee, headed by Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal, wrote a letter to the concerned bodies, urging to forward the names of their representatives—altogether 126—by Friday.
All the monitors to be appointed by the security bodies—42 personnel each from the NA and PLA and 21 each from the Nepal Police and APF—will reach all the satellite cantonments by early next week, said secretariat member Deepak Prakas Bhatta.
The Secretariat has also initiated preparations to set up a situation centre to monitor the cantonment sites within this week. The centre that will include 12 personnel from three security agencies and four from the PLA will keep 24 hours surveillance on the cantonment sites from the secretariat's office located at International Convention Centre. Bhatta said all the four agencies have been asked to submit the list of personnel to be deployed at the situation centre within Friday.
The Special Committee has deployed 8-member monitoring team comprising representatives from the three security agencies and the PLA in each of the seven main cantonment sites to fill the void following the departure of UNMIN in Jan. 15. The satellite cantonments were not monitored due to delay in the recruitment of manpower after UNMIN’s withdrawal.
