Diarrhoea stalks Rukum VDC
RUKUM, MAY 25 - Gopal BK, 29, died and around 30 others were taken ill following an outbreak of diarrhoea in a Dalit settlement at Jhula VDC in Rukum for the past one week.
BK, who had been suffering from the disease for the past few days, died on the way to the District Hospital on Wednesday. Villagers complained that the patients are in want of treatment.
According to Assistant Health Worker Usha Chand at the Jhula Sub-health Post, patients have to visit the district hospital for treatment since the sub-health post is usually without medicines. She said diarrhoea has spread in ward numbers 8 and 9 in the VDC for the past one week.
A local school, Ekata Lowery Secondary School, has been closed for an indefinite period. "We have decided to close the school fearing that the outbreak could take epidemic proportions," said Janak Chand, the chairman of the school management committee.
The District Public Health Office said it has already dispatched a four-member medical team to the affected area.
