KATHMANDU, MAY 24 - The CPN-UML Central Committee (CC) has decided on Tuesday to depict maximum flexibility—even to the extent of going for an alternative to party Chairman and Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal—for the formation of much-talked-about national consensus government.

With the endorsement of the proposal on peace, constitution and national government by the party CC, the UML has officially become clear on its position to pave the way for the formation of a national consensus government.

UML General Secretary Ishwor Pokhrel tabled the proposal that was passed by the politburo meeting the other day. The CC passed the proposal after incorporating minor suggestions on it, UML central member Karna Bahadur Thapa informed.

“There should be clear bases to conclude the peace and constitution drafting processes before extending the Constituent Assembly (CA) term and it is almost mandatory to form a national consensus government for which the party will be ready to show utmost flexibility,” the proposal states.

At the CC meet, Prime Minister and Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal said the term ‘pave the way for’ should not be mentioned in the proposal. UML central member close to Khanal—Ghanashyam Bhusal and Yogesh Bhattari, among others, demanded for removing the term.

Meanwhile, party central members aligned to leader KP Oli argued the term ‘pave the way’ should be replaced with ‘to resign’ citing it as being abstract.

At the meeting, leader Oli said the prime minister should immediately step down in order to save the national consensus and the CA.

Likewise, the party has decided to maintain its position to integrate 5000 Maoist combatants. PM Khanal has given a positive nod on the party's stand of integrating 5000 combatants.
