KATHMANDU, MAY 21 -

There is a need for better understanding of the science behind climate change and the increased attention on adaptation measures, said media persons from the South Asian countries on Friday.

This observation was made during a three-day workshop on ‘South Asia Media Workshop on Adaptation to Climate Change’ that concluded here Friday. Altogether 24 journalists from South Asia had participated in the workshop organised by Regional Climate Change Adaptation Knowledge Platform for Asia (AKP), Asia Pacific Adaptation Network (APAN) and International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD).

“Journalists help transform the science-based information into practical knowledge. Therefore, they have an important role in conveying the ‘right message’ to the people,” said Andreas Schild, director general of ICIMOD. The workshop was organised

with the objective to enhance awareness on the increasing impact of climate change, related vulnerabilities, and strategies for adaptation by mountain and downstream populations through strengthening food, water, energy, and environmental and biodiversity security.

This workshop serves as an effective means of providing media persons with necessary information on the ongoing changes in different ecosystems and on ways such changes affect the resident population and ultimately translate into the global scale.

Young-Woo Park, the regional director and representative for Asia and the Pacific, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, stressed, “Harnessing the power of media and their influence on public opinion in this region is needed for raising awareness on climate change and the need to adapt to it.”
