KATHMANDU, MAY 19 -

In an attempt to amass support, Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal on Thursday appealed to the Nepali Congress (NC) to lend support to the government for the extension of the Constituent Assembly (CA)’s term.

The prime minister, in the meeting convened with NC President Sushil Koirala at the latter’s residence in Maharajgunj, made the appeal and claimed that the government is committed to piloting the processes of peace and statute drafting to a logical conclusion.

In response, Koirala is reported to have urged PM Khanal to comply with the party’s 4-point charter of demands and establish a dependable basis for the completion of the peace process.

Koirala added that the NC will not support CA’s term extension unless the tabled condition are met and a vital progress is attained with the peace process prior to May 28, sources confirmed.

Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Loktantrik (MJF-L) Chairman Bijaya Kumar Gacchadhar also met the NC president at the latter’s residence today.

It is learnt that the discussion primarily focused on the issues of peace and constitution writing.

The NC and the MJF-L are reported to have forged an agreement not to endorse the proposal of CA’s term extension registered by the government.

Gacchadhar assured Koirala that the Sanyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM) will stand by the NC’s stance on term extension, sources confirmed.
