KATHMANDU, MAY 11 -

Police on Tuesday rounded up three members of the pro-UCPN (Maoist) Young Communist League (YCL) in connection with their involvement in extortion.

A police squad deployed by the Metropolitan Police Crime Division caught Maoist cadres Hari Bahadur Bhujel, a native of Kavre, Santa Man Lama of Lalitpur and Ujjwal aka Donang Blon of Lalitpur, who were found extorting gullible people in Lalitpur in the name of Valley Tigers’ Group. Blon is a member of Newa State Committee of the Maoist while the others are members of YCL, the youth wing of UCPN-Maoist.

The modus operandi of the trio was to threaten the locals over telephone with dire consequences in the name of an unidentified group and compel them to cough up hefty sums of money. It was found that the trio had extorted at least Rs. 800,000 from denizens of Dhukuchhap VDC of Lalitpur.

One victim, Deepak Neupane, told the police that he along with other locals was forced to pay the money when one of the three threatened him with dire consequences, saying that the Valley Tiger Group would not sit for dialogue to resolve the case. The arrested trio confessed to their bid to make fast bucks. Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain their involvement in abduction and extortion cases.

Only on Monday, the MPCD caught a member of the UCPN-Maoist along with two Central Members of Nepal Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (NLSP) taking bribe while making false promises of settling a police case. The arrestees have been identified as Dev Raj Budhathoki, 44, an active Maoist member from Jhapa, Rajesh Jha, 28, and Santa Adhikari, 22, residents of Jhapa and some central members of NLSP.

They had approached one Tara Shrestha with false promises of settling his case and demanded Rs. 600,000 as bribe for the police at the MPCD. The political members had already wrested Rs. 200,000 from Shrestha on the premises of MPCD.
