Street vendors foes of Pokhara traffic
KASKI, MAY 07 -
Pokhara is a major tourist destination with its enchanting scenery and lakes. But unmanaged footpath stalls are degrading the beauty of the lake city.
Footpath vendors have created traffic problems, and pedestrians find it increasingly hard to vend their way along the roads due to haphazardly-placed stalls. Pokhara Sub-metropolitan City (PSMC) took a decision last year to clear the streets of vendors. But the decision is yet to be implemented. “The stalls have not only ruined the city’s beauty, they have also caused traffic jams,” said Superintendent of Police Yadavraj Khanal, adding that police are ready to provide security if the municipality initiates efforts to clear roadside shops.
More than 2,000 roadside shops are being run haphazardly at main spots including Chipledhunga, Prithvi Chowk, Amarsingh Chowk, Baglung Bus Park and Shahid Chowk.
Pedestrians are the ones who suffer the most because of the shops. “Every day, I get late reaching my office as I can’t find space through the numerous shops on the way,” a victim said.
District Traffic Police Chief Hobindra Bogati accused the municipal authority of not taking steps to clear footpaths. PSMC Executive Officer Meghnath Kafle said the office would soon swing into action.
