Pun quits as Peace Minister
KATHMANDU, MAY 04 - Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Barsa Man Pun resigned from his post on Monday citing internal party reasons. However, sources claim that Pun decided to quit after his name was not recommended for the Home Ministry.
Earlier, Pun had reportedly warned UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal of giving up if he was not allocated the Home Ministry. Vice Chairman Mohan Baidya had voiced reservation over giving Home Ministry to Pun.
Sources confirmed that Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal was also against giving Home Portfolio to Pun, who is also the chief of Maoist combatants. Khanal had urged Dahal to reconsider Pun's name for Home minister as the recommendation of his name would only intensify protests against the Maoists.
Pun resigned prior to the Maoists' recommended names to be inducted in the Cabinet. Krishna Bahadur Mahara was named the Home Ministry. The recommendation to allocate the Home Ministry to Mahara instead of Pun was given by party Vice Chairman Baburam Bhattarai.
However, talking to eKantipur, Pun said that he resigned from the post to work for the party. "I had taken the post only for the time being. My resignation has nothing to do with the Home Ministry," Pun said.
