KATHMANDU, APR 15 - Some 20 teachers' unions, ideologically close to various political parties, have warned to launch a decisive protest if their demands are not addressed by mid-May.

Organising a press meet here on Friday the unions said as several agreements forged with the government have remained unimplemented and the education sector has not received due priority from the state, they have no alternative to protest. They presented around two dozen educational and legal demands during a  meeting with with Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal and Education Minister Ganga Lal Tuladhar on Thursday. “We forwarded our demands and PM Khanal and Minister Tuladhar have assured us that they would take steps for the implementation,” said Dil Bahadur Joshi, chairman of Nepal Teachers Union, adding all the unions will go for the decisive protest if they (Khanal and Tuladhar) fail to keep their words.

In their demands, the unions have sought a new education act as the law formulated in 1971 has not been replaced yet. Similarly, they have also demanded for the Constitutional Education Commission and permanent posting of temporary teachers through internal competition. “Teachers who were compelled to leave their jobs during the insurgency should be reinstated in their positions with compensation,” said Shankar Dhakal, chairman of Nepal Republic Education Forum.
