APF team unable to settle on border with Tibet
PARBAT, APR 15 -
Armed Police Force, which was dispatched to the border area in Mustang’s Lo Manthang to check Tibetan activities, has been stationed in district headquarters Jomsom due to unfavourable environment and the lack of space. A team of 50 personnel was deployed from the APF’s Chandika battalion, Parbat, under the command of a Deputy Superintendent of Police following Tibetan activities last year.
The APF said there is no possibility of deployment in the area, which is 84 kilometers from Jomsom, given little population and unfavourable environment. Some of the personnel are staying in a guest house while others are taking shelter in tents set up in Jomsom.
“We tried to set up permanent security post in the area earlier,” said Chandika battalion chief Madan Singh Bista. “But this could not happen due to frequent snowfalls and unstable weather.” He said it was impossible to stay there in tents too. An APF team including DIG Durja Kumar Rai, which ventured out to inspect the area for the purpose three days ago, returned without reaching the area due to snowfall.
Bista said it was difficult to shift the team to the area right now as it was snowing there. “We are planning to set up a security post on the border, which is 14 km from Lo Manthang,” he said.
