KATHMANDU, APR 12 -

‘Music is message’, goes a popular saying and musicians often lend their tunes to spread social ones. As youth ambassador of Save the Children since 2009, last Friday saw 1974 AD perform at Moksh, Jhamsikhel on the occasion of the 28th anniversary of United Nation Convention on the Right of the Child (UNCRC). The band was assisted by children of Hatemalo Children Club.

“Every six seconds, a child dies in Asia from a preventable cause. In Nepal, above 50,000 children below the age of five die annually from minor curable diseases such as typhoid, pneumonia and diarrhea. We all have a role to play in preventing it,” says Sudarshan Shrestha director of information and advocacy at Save the Children The band started with the song Ma ko hoon-a song adapted from Lekhnath Paudel’s poem. Their rock melodies brought to life the already popular poem, making it an instant hit with young listeners. Other poems like Banu Satyawadi, Padhu Nitya Vidya, which stress on good morals and living, was effectively conveyed to the youth as well. For their energising performance, the audience at the Moksh auditorium-about three hundred who flocked the venue-responded with great applause.

The band stunned the audience with Yehan, Aaja Kahan and Adrian Pradhan’s slow rock number Tyo Raat ko. The song Bardaan was accopanied by a two-minute video with the message ‘no child is born to die and every child has the right to life.' The video portrayed the plight of children in countries all over the world.

Audience charmers like Chyang Ba, Shajha Ko Bela, Gurans, Timi Bina, Pailo Junima, Hinda Hiddai, Bijayee- Hoon followed after and the band ended with the song Nepali Ho from highest selling album Satyabadi. Bassist Nirakar Yakthumba, lead guitarist Manoj Kumar K.C., drummer Sanjay Shrestha and vocalist Adrian Pradhan gave the evening their best.

“Every child has right to life and all its basic needs; it is our concern to control the current child mortality rate,” says K.C, the lead guitarist.
