Regmi named new Chief Justice
KATHMANDU, APR 11 - The Constitutional Council on Monday named senior-most Justice Khil Raj Regmi as the successor to Chief Justice Ram Prasad Shrestha.
Justice Regmi will assume the top judicial post after incumbent Chief Justice Shrestha officially retires on May 5.
However, the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee (PHSC) is yet to approve the name of Justice Regmi, decided unanimously by the Monday’s Council meeting.
“We have recommended him [Regmi] as he is a clean and the senior-most justice till date,” said House Speaker Subash Chandra Nembang.
Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal is the ex-officio chairman of the Council while Chief Justice Shrestha, Speaker Nembang, Nepali Congress leader Ram Chandra Poudel, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Law and Justice Krishna Bahadur Mahara, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bharat Mohan Adhikari, Defence Minister Bishnu Poudel and Peace Minister Barsha Man Pun are the members of the Constitutional Council.
As per the Article 103 (2) of the Interim Constitution, any person who has served as a justice of the Supreme Court for at least three years is eligible for the post of the Chief Justice.
