KATHMANDU, APR 07 - India on Thursday handed over the vehicles and logistics used by UNMIN to the Special Committee for the Supervision, Integration and Rehabilitation of the Maoist Combatants.

Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction Jaya Dev Shrestha and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy Jaideep Mazumdar signed an agreement on the transfer of the assets amid a function at UNMIN Headquarters, New Baneshwor. The transferred vehicles include 22 SUV's, 10 pick up vans, two ambulances, four buses and two mini trucks that were being used by UNMIN before its exit in mid-January.

The government plans to mobilise the vehicles at the seven main cantonment sites for strengthening arms monitoring responsibilities being undertaken by the serving officials of the Nepal Army, the Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force and the People's Liberation Army. One ambulance each will be allotted to the cantonments in eastern and western regions, said Joint Secretary Shrestha.

Talking to reporters, DCM Mazumdar said the handover of vehicles depicts India's continued commitment and support to Nepal's peace process. "We are ready to consider whatever request that will be made by the government and people of Nepal," he said.

The government had sought Indian support for the transfer of vehicles and logistics that it had provided to UNMIN to the Special Committee. The arms storage containers that are installed at the Maoist cantonment sites and the Chhauni barracks of the Nepal Army are on loan to the Nepal government from Indian side.

"Government of India remains a willing partner to the people and Government of Nepal in their efforts to bring about peace, stability and multi-party democracy in Nepal," reads a press release issued by the Indian Embassy after the handover ceremony. Coordinator of the Special Committee former Gen. Balananda Sharma and Chief of the Mission Support (UNMIN) Emmanuel K Agawu were also present at the ceremony.
