Ghode Jatra being observed
KATHMANDU, APR 03 -
The Ghode Jatra festival is being marked with a special programme at the Army Pavilion in the Capital on Sunday.
President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav is scheduled to address the programme at Tundikhel today.
The government has announced a public holiday on Sunday on the occasion of the festival.
Legends say that this festival came into existence as a celebration of the victory over a demon named Tundi, who resided over the meadow, which is known as Tundikhel at present.
Because Tundi was a terror amongst people, when he died, people rejoiced by dancing with horses on his body.
It is believed that the clamour of horses' hooves on Ghode Jatra at Tundikhel keeps the demon's sprit at bay.
Although the parade of the horses is the major attraction of the festival, numerous events—cultural programs, motorcycle displays, and gymnastic performances—are staged on the occasion.
