KATHMANDU, APR 02 -

President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav said on Saturday that promulgating the new constitution on majority basis without the support of the Nepali Congress (NC) and the Madhes-based parties would be inappropriate.

Speaking at a programme organised by the Reporters’ Club in the Capital, President Yadav said that despite the constitutional provision of drafting the constitution with two-thirds support, the same must not be ventured.

He added that only a constitution drafted with consensus among all political forces can guarantee permanent peace in the nation.

Underling the need to accomplish the processes of peace and statute drafting in order to institutionalise the progresses attained so far, Yadav urged for consensus and coordination among the political parties.

“Consensus among the four forces—UCPN (Maoist), NC, CPN-UML, and Madhes-based parties—is crucial for timely statute,” he said.

On the occasion, President Yadav underscored that the processes of peace and statute drafting must be piloted simultaneously.

Expressing concern over the current transitional phase in the nation, he appealed to the concerned parties to rise above ethnic, regional, religious, and political motives and move forward in unity for a national cause.

He added that the media must play a coordinative role in order to ensure the promulgation of the new constitution within May 28.
