RCT flex defensive muscles
DHARAN, MAR 29 -
Defending champions Rani Pokhari Team (RCT) moved into the semi-finals of the 13th Budha Subba Tuborg Gold Cup Football defeating new comers Majdoor Smriti Club 2-1 on Monday. The Rani Pokhari-based team will battle it out with Three Star for a place in the finals.
RCT, which had won the last edition edging out Nepal Police 3-1 in tie-breakers, had to wait until the 85th minute to break the deadlock. Nigerian recruit Antino Gomu came to the rescue when he curled his 18-yard free-kick awarded for a foul committed by Sugan Shrestha. Shekhar Limbu sealed the win for the defending champions in the first minute of the stoppage time. Limbu connected a cross from Gomu who had fed in the pass beating keeper Sangsang Maharjan. Gomu was later adjudged the Man-of-the-Match for his important contribution in the win.
RCT coach Madhu Karki said he was not pleased with team’s performance despite the win. “A bulk of players in my squad are inexperienced and due to this they were nervous throughout the match. However, I am happy that they utilised both the chances that came their way,” added Karki.
Debutants Majdoor kept their opponent under pressure throughout the match but failed to make the pressure pay owing to the lack of finishing. Majdoor, which had advanced to the quarters on the back of a sterling performance defeating visitors Namchhe Football Club Sikkim 3-1, pulled one back in the dying minutes through Pale Khadka.
Majdoor coach Sanjay Shrestha said his team enjoyed a healthy ball possession but were unable to score due to the lack of clinical finishers.
