Prez inaugurates conference on Buddhism

KATHMANDU, MAR 27 -

President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav inaugurated a two-day international-level conference on "Buddhism Practice and Pluralistic Innovation" in the Capital on Sunday.

The philosophy of Buddhism, its practices from the past and needs of this religion in the modern times will be discussed in the conference, which has been jointly organised by the Center for Nepal Asia Studies (CNAS) at the Tribhuvan University (TU) and Indian Council for Culture Relation.

On the occasion, President Yadav said that the message of love, goodwill, peace and nonviolence propounded by Lord Buddha is still relevant to Nepal and the world.

He said that Buddhism is always useful for the welfare of the humankind.

“The main spirit of the Buddhism is peace, development and establishment of a fearless society” the president said, “Lord Buddha's messages are relevant for establishing peace and drafting the framework of a democratic constitution in Nepal.”

He added that Nepal can take benefits during Nepal Tourism Year (NTY)-2011 for being the birth place of Lord Buddha.

Buddhist monks, scholars and researchers from Nepal, India, Thailand, South Korea, Myanmar, Japan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and other Asian countries are participating in the conference, Coordinator Dr. Ramesh Dhunge informed.

A total of 17 working papers will be presented in the conference on different dynamics of Buddhism and Buddhist philosophy, sources confirmed.

Rector of the TU Prof. Surya Lal Amatya said that the conference will help publicise Nepal as the birth place of Lord Buddha.
