I KATHMANDU, MAR 25 -
Mega Mart, which operates the Big Mart department store at City Centre, Kamal Pokhari, is all set to open another outlet at Lazimpat, Kathmandu. The company plans to open the new store by the end of April at the space formerly occupied by the Bluebird department store.
Big Mart will contain 11,000 sq ft on three floors and expects to provide employment to 70 to 80 people. According to Prince Khetan, managing director of Mega Mart, the company is investing around Rs 50 million in the project. “The incredible response we have been receiving from our customers has boosted our morale. And so we are coming up with another outlet to serve our customers spread over various parts of the city,” said Khetan. “Customers will get additional facilities in the new outlet which are unavailable at our store at City Centre.”
According to him, Big Mart at Lazimpat will feature an ATM lounge, telephone booth, stall featuring medical products and street food in thela concept with at least 14 stalls offering a variety of food. In addition, there will be stalls selling fresh fruit juice and betel leaves. “We don’t want to confine the mart to a retail market. We want to expand it as a bazaar, therefore, we are adding all these new attractions,” Khetan said.
As Big Mart is located within close distance of a number of fancy hotels, there will be a money changing stall for the benefit of tourists.
“Department stores are nothing new in Kathmandu. There were many department stores in the city in the past. Therefore, we are here to change the definition of department store by offering unmatched service to complement a great shopping experience,” said Antim Ranjit, marketing and branding manager of Mega Mart.
“When we started here at City Centre, we started with 7,000 varieties of products. Presently, our inventory consists of 34,000 kinds of products and counting,” added Ranjit. “This shows how popular Big Mart has become in a short span of time.”
Mega Mart is also planning to open two new outlets at Jawalakhel, Lalitpur and Battisputali, Kathmandu within this year. “We are not here for short-term business. We are here for the long run.
We are planning to expand our service throughout the country,” said Khetan. The company is considering extending the Big Mart chain to Pokhara and major cities in the Eastern Development Region.
