Thakur warns to 'cross limit' for pro-Madhesi statute
KATHMANDU, MAR 22 - In what sounded like a bold statement after hobnobbing with Indian leaders in Delhi, Terai Madhesh Loktantrik party (TMLP) Chairman Mahanta Thakur has warned that they could cross the limit if the new constitution fails to address the aspirations of Madhesi people.
Thakur, who returned to the capital after completing his six-day visit to India, remarked that even a majority-passed constitution would not be acceptable. “We can go to any limit if a constitution that fails to live up to the aspirations of Madhesis,” Thakur told the media persons upon his arrival at the Tribhuwan International Airport.
Thakur demanded that a constitution that ensures the rights of Madhes should be promulgated within May 28. He warned of launching protests if the government conspired to promulgate the new constitution with the consent of a majority.
Thakur said that the parties affiliated to Sanyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha—alliance of Madhes-based parties—would not join the Khanal-led government. “Madhesi Morcha has decided not to join the government,” Thakur remarked.
Top leaders of Madhes-based parties—Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Loktantrik (MJF-L), TMLP, and Sadbhawana party—had gone on a visit to India six days ago. MJF-L Chairman Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar had already returned two days ago.
The Madhesi leaders met Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Foreign Minister SM Krishna, among other senior Indian leaders, during their India visit.
