Woman dies of labour pain
Week-long airport shutdown
BAJURA, MAR 20 -
An expecting mother, who had been battling for life at a health post in Bajura districtfor the past week, died on Saturday morning for want of treatment.
Paramedics involved in Nandu Devi Dadal’s treatment at the Kolti-based primary health post had warned four days ago that she could die if she was not treated in a hospital having an operation theatre at the earliest as she was living with a dead foetus.
The 40-year-old from the remote Gotri village was admitted to the health post for a delivery case.
Following the advice, Bhaire Dadal, Nandu’s husband, had bought an air ticket to Nepalgunj. However, his attempt to save his wife’s life failed after flights from Kolti airport were obstructed by local people who were protesting an increase in airfare.
Bhaire’s repeated requests to the protesters and authorities concerned to help take his wife to Nepalgunj for treatment had fallen on closed ears.
Air service is the preferred travel option for the remote village residents who need to walk for a day to board a bus. Bhaire had borrowed money for the treatment of his wife, which could not be put to use.
Auxiliary Nurse Midwife Pramila Bista said Nandu died as she could not be taken to an equipped health facility because of the disruption
of flights. Bhaire and civil society representatives had requested the Chief District Officer, lawmakers in the district and political leaders to do the needful to help Nandu, to no avail. CDO Prem Singh said
he could not help despite efforts. The health facility lacked a doctor.
