Landless women to protest

KATHMANDU, MAR 14 - To alert the government to address issues of land reform, one thousand “landless” women from 50 districts will hold a fortnightly protest in the capital from Tuesday.

The movement, to be conducted under the coordination of National Land Rights Forum (NLRF), will stage sit-in programmes at the Constituent Assembly hall, central offices of UCPN (Maoist), CPN-UML, Nepali Congress and other political parties on different dates. According to NLRF, the main demands of the protest are ensuring land rights and women's right to own land in the new constitution, implement recommendations of the High-level Commission on Scientific Land Reform (HLCSLR) and implement past agreements regarding land reform including that in the Comprehensive Peace Accord.

“Although the deadline to promulgate the new constitution is approaching near, not much progress has been made in terms of addressing the issues of land reform by the government,” said land rights activist Jagat Deuja.

According to the report of the HLCSLR, 1.4 million Nepalis farmers are landless. Also, 70 percent Dalits in Terai and 22 percent Dalits in hill regions have no land despite being dependent on agriculture for a living.
