Security tight to foil anti-China protest

KATHMANDU, MAR 08 - Metropolitan police has tightened security in the Capital as a preventive measure to thwart possible anti-China protests ahead of the 52nd anniversary of a failed uprising by Tibetans against the 'invasion of their state' by China. Police said a large number of security personnel have been deployed round the clock in and around the Chinese Embassy, Consulate Office and places like Boudhha and Swoyambhu where Tibetans are likely to stage demonstrations, flag-rising and candlelight vigil to commemorate March 10 as 'Tibetan National Uprising Day'.

"Acting on the government policy, police have stepped up vigil as a preemptive measure to foil any protest against the neighboring country," said Superintendent of Police Pushkar Karki, the chief of the Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu. The preemptive measure was adopted after the police have been tipped-off that Tibetans are planning to stage anti-China protests outside the Chinese Embassy and other places. Nepal recognises Tibet as an integral part of China and any anti-China protests on its soil are not tolerable for the government. Tibetans across the world commemorate March 10 as Tibetan National Uprising Day with flag-raising, rallies and candlelight vigil. On March 10, 1959, Tibetans had staged a failed revolt against the Chinese 'occupation of their country'. Nepal is home to over 20,000 Tibetan refugees.
