The affair which had begun five years ago between bouts ended in matrimony for taekwondo players Deepak Bista and Ayasha Shakya, on Sunday.
Two of the most charismatic taekwondo players tied the knots at Budhanilkantha Temple to the surprise of many. Shakya, 23, who hails from Lalitpur, had grown idolising Bista who had already made his mark in the game. According to her, she was awestruck when she had first met him during the eight South Asian Games.
Olympian Bista, 35, too was smitten by Shakya who had just begun her career. “She had caught my eye from the very beginning as she is a good player. Her kicks are awesome and hard not to take notice,” said the four-time SAG gold medalist Bista about his new wife. “I am highly indebted to taekwondo which has not only provided me name and fame but also gifted me my beautiful bride.”
Theirs was a strange affair as both say they have no idea where and when they fell in love and both were aware of each others feeling.
“The venue must be Dashrat Stadium, where we met countless times,” the newly married couple said in unison, “But when? We have no idea. We just started seeing each other and believe it or not neither of us have proposed to each other till date.” Their affair, however, was kept under warp and the wedding this morning came as a surprise to many. ‘We are professionals and wanted nothing to distract our preparations that is why we had kept our affair a secret,” Bista said.
While Bista’s family were happy with their son’s choice and gave their blessing to the newly weds, Shakya was not able to conceive her parents.
After the wedding, Asian Games bronze medalist and SAG gold winner Shakya said, “Dad and mom, despite everything I love you and respect you.” Both of them plan to continue their professions as players and believe the union can help them excel in their careers.
