KATHMANDU, MAR 03 - Police nabbed an Indian "arms trader" along with two Chinese and American pistols and ammunitions in the Capital.

Based on intelligence inputs, a special police squad deployed by Metropolitan Police Crime Division on Wednesday evening caught Hira Mishra, 34, a native of Sitamadi in India, from Sheshnarayan VDC in Kathmandu while he was "in search of potential arms customers".

Police seized two US and China-made pistols, two magazines and two rounds of bullets from Mishra's possession.

In course of interrogation, Mishra told police that he had bought both the pistols and ammunitions at INR. 16,000 in India and came to Nepal to make fast bucks.

"This is the first time I came to Kathmandu to sell arms and ammunitions after I came to know that a single pistol can fetch up to Rs. 40,000 here," a police officer quoted Mishra as saying.

Police, however, suspected that Mishra, who was a farmer by profession, might have already supplied a large quantity of arms and ammunitions to Kathmandu-based clients. Police also said they had tracked down his suspicious movement in the past.

In the past two weeks, the Metropolitan Police confiscated at least six pistols from suspected armed dealers.

Earlier this week, MPCD had also managed to arrest two suspected arms dealers--Arun Kumar Gupta, 40, and Suresh Shah Kanu, 39, of Birgunj--with two pistols and ammunitions from Koteshwor.

Security personnel say the latest seizure of arms and ammunitions is a significant achievement in their effort to curb rampant arms trafficking.
