PARSA, FEB 24 -

Around 345 households in Parsa district have been left in the lurch as the government  is yet provide full compensation for their land that it acquired from them.

The government acquired around 78 hectares at Alau and Sirsiya Khalwatola VDCs to build an integrated customs office with Indian assistance in a bid to curb smuggling of goods from the neighbouring country.  The victims, who have launched an agitation, are demanding they be given full compensation. A meeting held two months ago in the presence of Indian officials assured them of an increase in compensation. However, the said compensation is not in sight yet.

A local, Hanuman Sah, said the stir was called off after officials pledged to ensure payment of compensation. But they haven’t walked the talk, he said. Locals have also threatened of a strong  agitation if their demands are not met.

The government had provided compensation ranging from Rs. 70,000 to Rs. 73,000 for around 0.034 hectares, which locals say is very low. They said they are hard up now as “their homesteads have been sold at the price of farmland”.

One of the victims said his family was forced to receive the meagre amount. “I had bought the acquired land at Rs. 300,000 per 0.034 hectares four years ago. Now, I cannot even buy half of that with the compensation amount,” said Hari Bhagat of Alau.
