Why not halt ticket move: SC to PADT
KATHMANDU, FEB 22 - The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday asked Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT) why an interim order should not be issued against its decision to sell tickets on the occasion of Mahashivaratri.
The court was responding to a writ filed against PADT's move to sell tickets priced at Rs. 1,000 each to those unwilling to wait in long queues and desirous of quicker entry into Pashupatinath Temple during the Mahashivaratri Festival on March 2. A single bench of SC Justice Tahir Ali Ansari asked PADT to furnish evidence and be present in the court on Friday.
The writ filed by Bharat Jangam demands apex court intervention to halt PADT's move, saying that it is unfortunate that people should be asked to pay for paying homage to their god. It also argued that not a single law in the country has made fee mandatory to enter temples.
Organising a press meet on Saturday, PADT had announced that like in previous years, tickets would be available on request and devotees buying tickets worth Rs. 1,000 per head would be allowed to enter Pashupati Temple via its western gate without bothering to queue up.
The writ also argued that PADT's decision to rope in banks to sell tickets increases the chances of non-Hindus entering the temple and if the number of ticket buyers swell, devotees queuing up for hours are likely to be deprived of a chance to enter the temple.
