KATHMANDU, FEB 13 - The UCPN (Maoist) celebrated the 16th anniversary of the ‘People's War Day’ on Sunday, organising various programmes across the nation.

The Maoists, who took up arms on Feb. 13, 1996 for what they called ‘the change’, have been celebrating the ‘People’s War Day’ every year, although the former rebel party came into the mainstream politics after signing the peace deal in April, 2006.

On the occasion, various programmes such as tea reception and Deepawali were organised by the party as well as by its sister organisations.

The Maoist Central Committee meeting on Friday had decided to mark the day peacefully by organising various programmes.

Maoist leaders including Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal were a part of a program organised at Rolpa, from where the Maoists launched their people’s war that last for a decade until the party signed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement with the then Seven-Party alliance.

Although, the Maoists had announced to take to agitation starting today, for the timely peace and statute, the party put off their declaration after the Maoists changed its decision to participate in the new government under the leadership of CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal.

Marking the day, Young Communist League (YCL), the youth wing of the Maoists, has also organised a special program at New Baneshwor, Kathmandu in the evening.
