Geneva jaunt: Rawal ‘misusing’ diplomatic passport
KATHMANDU, FEB 11 - Outgoing Home Minister Bhim Rawal on Thursday left for Geneva to attend a conference in the capacity of a minister.
Eight days after the dismissal of the Madhav Kumar Nepal-led government, Rawal is found to have misused diplomatic passport issued for him during his stint as home minister.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), Rawal's use of red passport issued in the capacity of home minister was in violation of the existing regulation. The diplomatic passport should be returned to the ministry following the concerned official's removal from office. Anyone misusing the diplomatic passport deserves punishment as per the existing laws.
A high-level home ministry official said Rawal left for Geneva to attend a three-day international conference on human rights organised by the Swiss government that had invited top government ministers associated with human rights issues, lawmakers and human rights officials.
Though Rawal's visit was scheduled during the Nepal-led government, his jaunt has dismayed the ministry officials.
The Cabinet had approved his visit to Geneva at the behest of former Prime Minister Nepal.
"We had never expected that Rawal would attend the conference in the capacity of a minister even after his discharge from the post," said an official requesting anonymity. Half a dozen lawmakers and human rights activists, including Padma Ratna Tuladhar and Daman Nath Dhungana boarded the flight to Switzerland along with Rawal.
