KATHMANDU, JAN 31 -

Minister for Information and Communication Shankar Pokharel said people are not convinced about a new prime minister taking the helm even after the amendment in Parliament Regulations.

"Since all prime ministerial hopefuls have not been able to ensure the majority basis as of now, what is the basis that the country will get a new prime minister on Magh 23 (Feb. 6)," he said addressing the function organised here today to celebrate 26th anniversary of Nepal Television.

If the Unified CPN (Maoist) cannot take the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML into confidence, the party has to convince other parties to form a government, said Pokharel, who is a UML leader.

Saying that mass media only can only apply balm on people's despair and pain created by political instability, he express hope that Nepal Television will be able to bring in change in the country by winning people's hearts and minds.

While maintaining that NTV has won people's hearts for broadcasting factual information, Minister Pokharel urged the state-run television to make the state's head high by staying away from uncontrolled competition.

In another context, Pokharel said that media shouldn't be unaccountable and should advocate openness and freedom.

At the function, Secretary of Ministry of Information and Communication Sushil Ghimire said that NTV should also take its service among poor people in rural areas.

Chairman of NTV Kundan Aryal stressed the need for bringing in a non-interference Act to save the state television from vested business interest and political interference.

On the occasion, winner of various sports events were awarded and scholarships were provided to junior level employees of NTV. RSS
